Aikidō — Walking the Way of Aiki

Returning the Body to Kannagara

Earth Shinto

Our modern world collectively manifests a deep and pervasive discomfort—one that arises from losing awareness of, and intimacy with, the inexhaustible flow of Kannagara, the living movements of Divine Nature.

The martial Way of Aikidō exists as a response to this condition.

The Sacred Origin of Aiki

Aikidō, as transmitted through Ueshiba Morihei (Ō-Sensei, Kaiso [founder]), emerged as a flowing and uniquely powerful Budo/ martial way and also as a path of healing and reconciliation. The mission of Aiki is to clearly pacify the distortion that arises when human beings lose their grounded connection with the divine flow of life itself.

Ki-no-Michi

The Path of Aiki

Returning to Kannagara

We experience true and lasting happiness when we feel in alignment with the processes of life—moving naturally, in rhythm with the life-giving and sustaining forces of Divine Nature. This is Kannagara: proceeding in harmony with the restless, infinite, living movements of Nature itself, where vitality, breath, balance, and life-mission flow naturally.

By contrast, much of modern society collectively exhibits a deep and pervasive discomfort—a subtle dis-ease that arises from losing awareness of, and connection with, the inexhaustible flow of Kannagara, the living movements of Divine Nature.

The Aiki Body — The Listening Body

When we penetrate to the heart of Aikidō, we encounter a simple yet profound truth:

There exists a physiological and energetic organization to consciousness itself.

When we stand correctly upon the sacred Earth, breath settles, awareness deepens and broadens, and Ki begins to circulate naturally. This state may be called the Aiki Body—the listening body: grounded yet immediately responsive, relaxed yet powerful, centered yet expansive, capable of perceiving and responding directly to life, moment by moment.

Entering the Aiki-no-Michi

Shall we share Aiki Training/ keiko together and activate our Ki and our Makoto—deep sincerity...

Through keiko, we penetrate beneath surface tension and habitual reaction, entering the rich and transcendent depths of the Kannagara realm. Utilizing sacred technologies preserved within Shintō—breath, posture, sound, rhythm, and intention as basic of our martial techniques we can stand firmly on the living Earth, perceive the voices of birds, trees, wind, and rain, and purify various obstacles.

Each practitioner’s mission and path is unique.
The Way adapts to the individual.

Aikidō and the Living Earth

We often speak intuitively of “Mother Nature.”
This intuition is deeply accurate.

Life unfolds through the embodied model of parent and child. When we live in alignment, we receive the daily blessings of nourishment, vitality, and renewal from Great Nature. This Life Force—this sustaining intelligence—is Kannagara: the way life proceeds in accord with itself.

Aikidō exists to restore us to this relationship.

Ki, Genki, and Vital Life Power

To live a fulfilled, grounded, and joyful life, Ki must be activated again and again.

When Ki flows freely and harmoniously, we become Genki—filled with vitality, clarity, courage, life power, and deep knowing. Through Aiki movements and interactions that unite bodily motion with the rising and settling of Ki, we regain stability, responsiveness, and presence.

This era is complex and demanding. Aikidō cultivates the wisdom, steadiness, and centered clarity needed to forge the positive path forward—without aggression, without collapse.

Lawrence Koichi Barrish Sensei brings over 55 years of engaged daily Aiki training, teaching, and exploration, integrating embodied martial transmission with the living cosmology of Shintō.

Aikidō is practiced as life itself.
